Camp Counselors & Assistant Counselors

Camp Counselors & Assistant Counselors
Position: Temporary, seasonal
Reports to: Camp Director
Pay Scale: $16 - $18/hour
Camp counselors and assistant counselors lead environmental education activities, outdoor explorations, hikes and games for children in Pre-K to seventh grade. There are two camp locations: The Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium in Bristol, RI, and the Caratunk Wildlife Refuge in Seekonk, Massachusetts.
Responsibilities: Develop and implement natural history lessons, activities, games, and arts and crafts for ages 4 - 12. Supervise campers’ health and safety, and maintain clear communications with staff, parents and campers. Attend staff training and maintain general camp upkeep. Camp Counselors and Assistants may also be overseeing Junior Counselors who assist during the week. Summer Camp starts with a week of camp training June 16 – 20, and camp runs June 23rd to August 8th, 2025.
Qualifications: Camp Counselors must be 18 years or over, and Assistant Counselors 16 years or older. Camp Counselors and Assistant Counselors can be enrolled in a field of study or have experience and background in the following: environmental education, environmental science, biology, marine biology, conservation or education. Experience of working with young children is necessary, preferably in a camp or outdoor setting. Additionally, camp staff must be physically able and comfortable working outdoors in an active environment on hot summer days. Good communication skills, a great attitude and team player, plus experience with science (STEAM) activities are preferred. Must have current Community CPR and First Aid or be willing to become certified. Must have consistent, reliable transportation to and from camp.
Must be able to attend staff training June 16 – June 20, 2025.
Criminal background and Sexual Offender checks are required.
Compensation: Camp Counselors and Assistant Counselors are paid for training as well as camp sessions: Camp Counselors $18.00/hour and Assistant Counselors $16.00/hour.
Head Camp Counselor
Position: Temporary, seasonal
Reports to: Camp Director
Hourly Rate: $20/hour
Responsibilities: Assist the Assistant Camp Director (AD) in the daily operations and logistics of summer camp, including teaching when necessary. Two positions are available: one at the Caratunk Wildlife Refuge in Seekonk, MA and one at Audubon’s Nature Center & Aquarium in Bristol, RI.
Communicate and collaborate with the AD to ensure smooth functioning of daily camp activities.
Contribute to maintaining a positive and inclusive camp environment. Encourage staff and campers to work together as a team.
Collaborate with camp instructors in the development and implementation of high-quality activities.
Assist the AD and camp counselors in tailoring activities to the developmental needs and interests of each age group.
Be able to teach when needed.
Assist in supervising campers and model appropriate behavior management techniques.
Assist with games, songs, and creative activities.
Assist the AD and counselors in managing resources and materials for activities.
Communicate effectively with supervisors, campers, parents, and fellow staff members.
Be aware of and adhere to camp safety protocols and follow established procedures for the well-being of campers.
Attend camp training.
Qualifications:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must exhibit enthusiasm and love working with children.
Must be able to physically active outside in the sun all day.
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
Previous camp counseling experience with the Audubon Society of RI or equivalent work is a plus.
Favorable completion Criminal and Sex Offender Information is necessary.

Assistant Camp Director
Position: Temporary, seasonal
Reports to: Camp Director
Hourly rate: $24/hour
Responsibilities: Assist in the management of Audubon Summer Camp under the direction of the Camp Director (CD). One position will be for the summer camp held at the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium in Bristol, RI and one position will be for the summer camp held at the Caratunk Wildlife Refuge in Seekonk, MA.
Provide support and motivation for the camp staff. Help maintain a fun, friendly work atmosphere.
Communicate clearly and effectively with the CD, camp staff, Audubon staff, parents, campers and the public.
Assist CD in supervising and evaluating counselors and junior counselors. Help provide feedback and guidance to camp staff. Share recommendations and concerns with CD regarding counselors’ performance.
Assist with development and teaching of pre-camp training(s).
Manage the daily logistics and oversee the daily activities of the camp program.
Participate in staff meetings and planning sessions.
Protect the physical, emotional, welfare and safety of campers and camp staff. Address conflicts, questions, concerns, or parent issues/comments as directed by and in consultation with the CD.
Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures during camp programs.
Model appropriate behavior and always use appropriate behavior management techniques.
Assist in evaluating the success of the program.
Be able to substitute teaching/leading activities.
Be able to physically hike on woodland trails, be comfortable with working in the heat, and long, active days.
Be willing to use first aid and CPR skills when necessary, according to the camp’s procedures.
Qualifications:
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Must have demonstrated experience of working with children in a safe and effective manner. A minimum of one season’s experience as camp Instructor or teacher is necessary, although other childcare experience may be considered.
Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, outdoor recreation, environmental education, education, or other field related to childcare/development is required.
Experience and background in working with children with diverse, intellectual, emotional, and developmental abilities, or a degree in Special Education is strongly preferred.
Demonstrated ability to work with and communicate effectively with people of all ages is necessary.
Must be available to follow the camp schedule, which includes working some extended days.
Must be able to work cooperatively and independently; and have effective communication skills, and effective computer skills.
Must exhibit enthusiasm, a sense of humor, patience, and self-control.
The preferred candidate will have supervisory skills and experience working or volunteering at a nature camp, nature center, or outdoor interpretive center.
Current certification in first aid and CPR during the full period of employment are required.
Favorable completion of both the Criminal and Sex Offender Record Information is necessary.
Compensation and Schedule: Start and end dates for both positions would be late April or early May to mid-August 2025. The pay rate is $24.00/hour.
Junior Camp Counselors
Audubon Counselor-in-Training (CIT) alumni, teens who were enrolled in other camp CIT programs, or those with comparable experience may apply to become a volunteer Audubon Junior Camp Counselor. These junior counselors work closely with Audubon staff and current counselors as they learn more about the workings of summer camp.
Teens aged 15 and up with camp experience are welcome to apply. Applicants should demonstrate maturity, work well as a part of a team, show leadership potential, and a desire to learn more about the world of environmental education. Junior Counselors will be asked to run select camp activities, assist with games, camper safety and well-being, and morning and afternoon transition times. They will receive direction, coaching, and support in their role, and will meet with camp directors each week.
Note that Junior Counselors are volunteer positions and are eligible for a small stipend and school internship credit.*
Counselor-in-Training Camp
Audubon offers a counselor-in-training program for teens ages 13–15 to gain hands-on experience in environmental education and summer camp skills under the guidance of experts in the field.
CIT's build leadership skills alongside their peers through teambuilding activities, educational techniques, child development, natural history exploration. They will get hands–on opportunities to apply their skills, as they assist our youngest campers in daily camp activities.
