2027 Research Symposium
Join the Audubon Society of Rhode Island for the third avian research symposium and gain a better understanding of research on birds and pollinators in our region.

Plenary speaker: Freya McGregor (she/her) is a disabled birder and an occupational therapist. As a consultant at Access Birding, and a research associate at Virginia Tech, her work centers on improving access and inclusion for disabled birders. She is the author of A Field Guide to Accessible Birding in the United States, to be published by Princeton University Press on April 6th 2027. Talk title: Adventures of a Disabled Birder: Seeking accessible birding experiences across the U.S.
This year, attendees will learn more about how humans "harm" bird populations through effects of forever pollutants (such as PFAS), pesticides, and pathogenic influences (i.e., avian influenza) before we dive into how researchers are "helping" birds with restoration, advocacy, pollinator work and habitat management strategies that benefit bird populations.

Art Exhibit by Hilary Archer
Opening Reception on November 8, 2PM - 4PM
Tide and Talon: Portraits of Rhode Island’s Coastal Birds & Raptors showcases the work of Rhode Island wildlife artist Hilary Archer, whose paintings explore the beauty, symbolism, and presence of birds along the region’s shorelines and skies. Inspired by direct observation in the natural world, Archer captures coastal birds and birds of prey with striking attention to light, color, movement, and personality.
Working from photographs she takes in the field, Archer creates paintings that evoke memory, emotion, and connection. Her work reflects a deep appreciation for the role birds play in both the ecosystem and the human imagination as enduring symbols of resilience, freedom, and transformation. Through these intimate portraits, Tide and Talon invites viewers to slow down, observe, and reconnect with the remarkable wildlife that inhabits Rhode Island’s coastal landscapes.
