RePower Audubon: Breaking Ground on First Solar Carport
The Audubon Society of Rhode Island was joined by government officials, community leaders, project partners and supporters on September 25, 2026, to break ground on a solar carport in Bristol, Rhode Island.
This transformative renewable energy project will convert the parking area at the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium into a clean-energy asset, generating over 360,724 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, while providing covered parking for visitors. Leading by example, the project marks a significant milestone in Audubon's commitment to climate leadership and sustainability.
In 2024, Audubon launched the RePower Audubon initiative with the goal of becoming net zero by 2030. Together with a companion carport planned for Audubon Headquarters in Smithfield, Rhode Island and the replacement of fossil fuel HVAC systems with all electric heat pump HVAC systems at both locations, these solar installations will enable the Audubon Society of Rhode Island to achieve its net zero goal by the end of 2027, three years ahead of schedule.
“Advancing solar technology demonstrates Audubon’s commitment to environmental leadership, renewable energy, and climate resilience,” said Audubon Executive Director Jeffrey C. Hall. “We hope this project serves as a model for other organizations and businesses seeking practical ways to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and generate clean energy on-site.”
Climate-related impacts, including flooding, severe storms, and rising temperatures, continue to affect Rhode Island’s communities, wildlife, and natural resources. While building climate resilience requires broad action, organizations, businesses, and homeowners can all play a role by reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and investing in renewable energy solutions.
"Audubon's mission is to protect birds, other wildlife and their habitat through conservation, education and advocacy for the benefit of all people and all living things,” said Audubon Board President David Caldwell Jr. “RePower Audubon demonstrates that we can reduce and eliminate our emissions in an economically and environmentally responsible manner if we approach the issue in a thoughtful manner, guided by science and data. It is our hope that we are blazing a trail for others to follow."
Construction of the solar carport at the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium is expected to be completed this fall. The solar carport at Audubon Headquarters in Smithfield will be constructed in 2027.
