July 2018 Highlights from the Audubon Society of Rhode Island

Relaxing twilight walks, morning River Cruises, and a evening lawn concert with lemonade…Audubon knows how to keep it cool in July when the weather gets hot and muggy!

Icky, Squishy, Weird and Wacky Science
Citizens Bank Free Family Fun Day

July 7, 2018; 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

Dive in to Audubon’s icky, squishy, weird, and wacky science adventures! Roll up your sleeves and experiment in the classroom and take a hike in the field. Get ready to squish in slime, study scat and much, much more!

Thanks to Citizens Bank, the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium is open free to the public the first Saturday of every month. Programs are free, no need to register.

10:00 am – 2:00 pm: Scat and Tracks ID Table
10:00 am-2:00 pm: Wacky Science Craft Table
10:30 am: Squishy Wormy Story Time
11:00 am: Buggy Nature Walk. Bugs aren’t icky but finding them can be tricky! We’ll take a hike to look for some of our favorite insect friends.
1:30 pm: Weird Science Experiments: Make some eco-friendly slime.
2:00 pm: Animal Interview

Saturday Nature Walks with Audubon

Join Audubon for weekly nature walks on Saturdays. Ramble down the trails with an Audubon naturalist as your guide. Please note this program is weather dependent. No registration required.

Power and Grace: Photography Exhibit by Abeselom Zerit

July 8 – August 25, 2018; 9:00 am-5:00 pm

From the grace of a gliding Great Egret to the power of a diving Osprey, this collection of photographs by Abeselom Zerit explores the wonder of birds in flight. All images were taken close to home on the Seekonk River in Pawtucket and Providence, showing that beauty can be found in unlikely urban locales.

Explore the Shore with Audubon

July 12, 2018; 2:00 – 3:30 pm

Audubon loves the shore! Bring the family along and wind your way down to the water with an Audubon guide. Search for some favorite plants and animals along the way. Come dressed in sturdy shoes that can get wet, wear sunscreen and bring a water bottle.

Early Morning Breakfast and Birding Cruise
on the Seekonk River

July 14, 2018; 8:00 – 9:00 am

Join Audubon aboard the Blackstone Valley Explorer for a morning cruise on the beautiful Seekonk River. Sip coffee and juice and sample baked goodies as we search for wildlife along the river. Participants may wish to bring binoculars. The Explorer is a covered boat and runs rain or shine. Co-sponsored with the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council.

Bird Banding with Audubon

July 14, August 18, 2018; 9:30 – 11:30 am

Join Audubon and witness bird banding, where experts capture, band, measure and release songbirds in order to record their movements. The techniques of identifying, measuring, weighing, and banding the birds will be demonstrated before they are released. The migratory habits and life history of each captured species will be discussed. Bring a camera and binoculars. Register early.

Sea Glass Jewelry

July 15 2018; 11:00 am – 12:30 pm

Come create a beautiful pendant with sea glass found on local beaches. Learn how to choose the right piece of glass and transform it into creative jewelry using quick and easy wire wrapping techniques. Program includes all materials. Find something special on the beach? Bring that too! This class fills quickly. Advance registration is required as space is limited to 10 participants.

Edible Wild Plants and Mushrooms of New England with Russ Cohen

July 18, 2018; 6:00 – 8:00 pm

New England is home to over 150 species of edible wild plants and edible mushrooms. Some are more nutritious and/or flavorful than their cultivated counterparts. Join Russ Cohen, expert forager and author of “Wild Plants I Have Known…And Eaten” for a presentation covering over 70 of the tastiest species the region has to offer. Program includes identification tips and general guidelines for safe and environmentally responsible foraging as well as a foraged goodies to taste! Registration required.

Tide Pool Critter Meet and Greet

Come meet some of Audubon’s friendly tide pool animal ambassadors without having to walk to the shore. Learn about the special way sea stars eat. Touch a mollusk. Make some new animal friends!

Bill Harley Concert to Benefit Audubon Caratunk Wildlife Refuge

Join the ever-popular Bill Harley in a family-friendly concert with popcorn and lemonade on the lawn at Audubon’s Caratunk Wildlife Refuge.

A two-time Grammy award-winning artist and recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the RI Council for the Humanities, Bill Harley uses song and story to paint a vibrant and hilarious picture of growing up, schooling and family life. His work spans the generation gap, reminds us of our common humanity and challenges us to be our very best selves.

Stump the Scientist

Have you ever wondered how big a groundhog’s burrow is? Did you find a mysterious feather in your backyard and want to know whose it is? Audubon scientists will be available to answer all your science and nature questions. Earn a special sticker when you stop by and try to stump the scientist!

Improv Comedy Night with The Bit Players

July 26, 2018; 7:00 – 8:00 pm

Leave the kids at home and come to Audubon to enjoy a night of improv comedy and locally brewed beer. The Bit Players, a local improv group, will leave their cozy home at the Firehouse Theatre in Newport and head to Audubon for an evening performance. Modeled after the hit TV show "Whose Line is it Anyway?" this show is full of hysterical characters, hilarious games, and side-splitting musical numbers. Everything is improvised on the spot from audience suggestions! Must be 21+ to attend.

Bats and Beer During the Full Moon
Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge, Exeter, RI

July 27, 2018; 7:00-9:00 pm

Join us at Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge for an evening of fun learning about the fascinating world of bats and tasting some local brew. Start with a brief presentation and learn about the bats live in your area. Then head out onto the trails in search of these winged creatures. We will stop at the pond and watch these magnificent creatures at work catching their evening meal. If we are lucky, we may even catch a glimpse of the beaver that lives on the pond. Please bring a flashlight.

Twilight Hike with Micro-Beers and Artisan Cheeses
Audubon Caratunk Wildlife Refuge, Seekonk, MA

July 29, 2018; 7:00 – 9:00 pm

Come taste micro-beers and artisan cheeses and enjoy a light hike through the Caratunk Wildlife Refuge after the gates are closed! Explore the pond, field and woods at twilight on a beautiful summer evening. We may see a muskrat or otter, hear owls or foxes, or observe bats and fireflies. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight. Don't forget your camera and binoculars if you have them! This is a weather dependent program. Participants must be 21+ to register.
